The Kunoa North inter-island fiber optic cable system enhances connectivity across the Hawaiian Islands, including terrestrial and subsea segments.
The Kunoa North cable system is part of Hawaiian Telcom's network. The north-focused cable route complements Hawaiian Telcom's existing southern fiber route and create a more resilient fiber network that seamlessly allows rerouting to minimize service disruptions.
The subsea segments of the Kunoa North cable system is a high-capacity, low-latency, repeaterless fiber optic subsea cable system, which is critical to Hawaiian Telcom's middle-mile inter-island network system.
The Kunoa North cable system is part of the "Connect Kākou" initiative. It focuses on "last-mile" connectivity—taking the internet from backbones like the Hawaiian Islands Fiber Link (HIFL) and delivering it directly into homes and communities.
The Kunoa North inter-island cable project costs approximately US$87 million, including a $37 million National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) grant, with the remaining $50 million financed by Hawaiian Telcom.
The Kunoa North project supports the State of Hawai'i's Connect Kākou initiative, designed to make high-speed, reliable internet service more accessible and affordable, and support digital equity in Hawai'i.
Hawaiian Telcom has selected I.T. International Telcom Marine SRL for the turnkey design, supply and installation of the Kunoa North inter-island fiber optic cable system, expected to be completed in 2028.
