The Guam-Philippines Cable System was lunched in late 1997 and ready for service in March 1999, a large capacity optical submarine cable between the islands of Guam and The Philippines to resolve the telecom capacity shortage which occured due to the rapid growth of telecommunications between Southeast Asia and North at that time. The Guam-Philippines Cable System is owned and operated by the Guam Philippine Limited Partnership, a private joint venture founded by the Kanematsu Corporation, KDD-SCS (KDD-Submarine Cable System) and PLDT (Philippine Long Distance Telecom) in October 1997.
