The APX East is a new express subsea "hypercable" under development by Australian company SUBCO that will directly link Australia and the mainland United States. It is planned to be Ready for Service (RFS) in the fourth quarter of 2028.
System Overview
Owner: SUBCO
Route: The APX East cable follows an all-deepwater route between Sydney, Australia, and California, USA (specifically San Diego).
Design: It is designed as a single, continuous optical path system. This design avoids the need for intermediate landing or optical/electrical regeneration points, offering lower latency and simpler operation compared to existing transpacific systems.
Capacity: The APX East cable system comprises 16 fiber pairs and is being built to meet the surging demand for high-capacity international connectivity driven by large-scale AI and cloud infrastructure investments in Australia.
Sovereignty: The APX East cable system is positioned as Australia's first "sovereign-owned" international hypercable, intended to reduce reliance on US hyperscalers for Australian connectivity needs.
Future Branches: Optional branches to Hawaii and Fiji are planned to be operational in 2029, as additions to the main trunk route.
Costs: The APX East project has a budgetary cost of US$500 million (AU$747 million).
