EllaLink announced the execution of agreement with the Ministère de la Transformation Numérique et de la Modernisation de l’Administration (MTNMA) of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania for the construction, operation and maintenance of a second international subsea cable that will directly connect the country to Madrid, Spain.

Mauritania is currently connecting with only one subsea cable system, the ACE (Africa Coast to Europe). In 2010, the European Investment Bank (EIB) granted Mauritania a fund of EUR 8 million, as part of its total cost of EUR 19 million. (USD 25 million) for the construction of the ACE's Mauritania Submarine Cable Connection.

The Ellalink's Mauritania branch will enable a new diverse infrastructure and provide Mauritania with direct cost-effective international connectivity up to European main exchanges.

The project includes the construction of a Cable Landing Station in Nouadhibou, the second largest city of Mauritania and a +500km branch connected to existing EllaLink’s subsea cable system. Alcatel Submarine Networks has been selected to build the subsea section which will include two fibre pairs and use state-of-the-art optical technologies such as a ROADM WSS branching unit. EllaLink will be also in charge of the operation & maintenance of this new infrastructure.

The project is expected to be ready for service in early 2027. It is reported that in 2019, the Government of Mauritania and EllaLink signed an agreement to strengthen Mauritania's connectivity via the EllaLink submarine cable system, with the system originally expected to be operational by 2020.

Upon completion, the new infrastructure will deliver to Mauritanian operators an initial 200Gbps low latency direct circuit between the new cable landing station of Nouadhibou and EllaLink’s Point of Presence in Madrid.

This new diverse submarine cable will reinforce the Mauritanian international connectivity reducing the risk of disruption of the Mauritanian economy and supporting the digital transformation of the country with capacity set to grow for the next 25 years.

The project is supported by the European Investment Bank and by the CEF Digital program of the European Commission.

The European Commission has granted Ellalink a fund of € 9.6 million under the CEF Digital program. The total cost of the Ellalink Mauritania branch is € 29.5 million.
