The SJC2 consortium and NEC Corporation announced today the completion of construction and the start of operations for the Southeast Asia-Japan Cable 2 (SJC2) cable system, with a total system capacity of 126 Tbps.

SJC2’s main trunk links Singapore, Hong Kong China, and Japan, with additional branches covering other key Asia-Pacific countries and regions. Constructed by NEC, the SJC2 cable spans a total length of approximately 10,500 kilometers and employs the latest optical wavelength division multiplexing technology, which is capable of transmitting more than 126 Tbps, i.e., 400 Gbps line rate × 45 wavelengths × 7 fiber pairs. (Editor's note: there are 8 fiber pairs on the SJC2 trunk, with one additional fiber pair owned by a member without participation in the announcement of SJC2 launch)

According to NEC, the members of the SJC2 consortium participating in the announcement include China Mobile International Limited (CMI), Chunghwa Telecom Co., Ltd., Donghwa Telecom Co. Ltd., KDDI Corporation, PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia International (Telin), Singapore Telecommunications Limited (Singtel), SK Broadband, True Internet Corporation Co., Ltd., and Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT). The SJC2 consortium shall include other members such as Meta (Facebook).

Mr. Meng Fai Yue, Senior Director, Singtel and Mr. Herbert Xiong, Head of Submarine Cables Infrastructure, China Mobile International, the Co-Chairs of the SJC2 Consortium Management Committee, emphasized the strategic significance of the SJC2 submarine cable system, co-authoring a statement saying that, "As a critical part of global digital infrastructure, the SJC2 cable system will boost connectivity in the Asia-Pacific region, delivering unparalleled bandwidth capacity and ultra-low latency to power the next-generation of cloud computing, AI-driven services and real-time data exchange across Asia's leading economies."

SJC2 enhances submarine cable infrastructure in the Asia region with additional capacity, route diversity, and resilience by strengthening the redundancy of the network to meet the increasing demand for connectivity within Southeast Asia and East Asia. This will contribute to a more stable communications environment to power AI and other bandwidth-intensive applications.

In addition to the SJC2 cable system, the Asia Direct Cable (ADC) connecting China (Hong Kong SAR and Shantou), Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam was put into operation in November 2024. SJC2 and ADC enhance diverse and resilient high capacity routes within Southeast Asia and East Asia, in addition to other earlier generation subsea cables such as APG, ASE, SJC, etc.

It has been 6 years and 9 months of long journey for the foundation, design, construction, completion of the ADC project. The inauguration of the ADC cable system marks the completion of the first new submarine cable in Asia region in eight years after the completion of the APG cable system in October, 2016.

The journey for the SJC2 cable project is even longer. Launched in March 2018, more than two years earlier than ADC which was launched in June 2020, the SJC2 has just achieved partial operation almost 8 months later than the completion of the ADC project.

NEC and a consortium has just announced to build the Asia United Gateway East (AUG East) submarine cable system connecting Singapore and Japan, with Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, South Korea and Taiwan. It is expected that the AUG East won't be ready for service until Q3 2029.

All of ADC, SJC2 and AUG East are supplied by NEC.

As a result of geopolitical conflicts since the late 2010s, it has been much more difficult to build a subsea cable system in various regions in the world, and it has been taken longer of five to eight years for a subsea cable system to achieve operational status since its initiation, compared with a journey of three to five years it should be in the earlier age.
