Malbec is a new 2,500 km submarine cable that links the Brazilian cities of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo to Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, with a branching unit to Porto Alegre, Brazil.

By connecting Argentina to GlobeNet’s network in Brazil, the new infrastructure will provide seamless connectivity between the Southern Cone of South America and the United States. When completed, it will be the first new submarine cable route to reach the Argentinian coast since 2001.

The Malbec cable system is co-owned by GlobeNet (now V.tal) and Meta. "Malbec" is named after the renowned Argentinian wine.

The Malbec cable system has been put into service as of June 1, 2021.

In May 2025, Meta announced to partner with V.tal to extend the Malbec subsea cable to Porto Alegre, Brazil by 2027. With this new extension, Malbec will become the first subsea cable to land in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, bringing more connectivity to millions of people in Southern Brazil and neighboring countries.
