China Mobile International Limited (CMI) announced the activation of the PEACE submarine cable on 30 August 2024. The PEACE cable system connects Singapore to France, to provide fast, open and flexible connectivity between Asia, Africa and Europe.

CMI Activates PEACE Linking Singapore and France

CMI and 11 partners participated in the construction of PEACE submarine cable.

When launched in 2017, the PEACE cable system was originally designed to connect Pakistan, East Africa (via Djibouti and Kenya), and Europe (France), across Egypt, with branching units linking Malta, Cyprus, Saudi Arabia, etc. The Pakistan-Egypt-Kenya segment and the Egypt-France segment of the PEACE cable system went live in December, 2022.

In early 2022, PEACE Cable International Network Co., Ltd (PEACE Cable) announced to extend the PEACE cable to Singapore. At that time, HMN Technologies (HMN Tech), the turn-key system supplier of the PEACE cable system, was pushed out to be the supplier of the SEA-ME-WE 6 (SMW6) cable system due to interference by the United States, according to a report by REUTERS. China Mobile and China Telecom had to drop out their memberships in the SMW6 consortium and withdraw their investments on the SMW6 cable system, although they were initial parties of the SMW6 consortium. In turn, China Mobile and China Telecom participated in the extension of the PEACE cable to Singapore. CMI acts as the landing party to land the cable in Singapore.

With the PEACE open cable solution, CMI is committed to providing neutral, flexible and non-differentiated interconnection services to carriers, OTT service providers and enterprises around the world. It also leverages the New Egypt Crossing, utilizing fully diversified terrestrial cables across Egypt, instead of the traditional south and north routes. This enables CMI to provide bandwidth services with high quality, low latency and high security between Asia and Europe.

With the PEACE, AAE-1 and SEA-ME-WE 5 submarine cables, CMI has now formed three routes between Asia and Europe, further upgrading the network availability and effectively meeting the bandwidth requirements. Additionally, utilizing the self-built ring systems of its fiber optic networks in Singapore, Malaysia and Europe, which connect with data centers across the regions, CMI can customize PoP-to-PoP solutions with highly scalable and flexible bandwidth.

In addition to the PEACE cable, CMI also participated in the India-Asia-Express (IAX) and the 2Africa cable systems.
