Crosslake Fibre to Build CrossChannel Fibre System between the UK & France

Crosslake Fibre announced on Tuesday its newest subsea cable project, CrossChannel Fibre. The historic, next-generation 550km cable is the first fibre-optic subsea cable to be built across the English Channel in nearly twenty years and will connect Slough, United Kingdom and Paris, France. This new subsea cable is designed to support the increase in bandwidth requirements from telecoms, enterprises, content providers, as well as financial, gaming, and media companies that require high capacity, low latency connectivity. The high fibre count, non-repeatered system will contain 96 fibre pairs, each providing over 20 terabits per second of capacity throughput, and will be ready for service in the fall of 2021.

Sparkle Deploys Ciena's WL5e on Curie Cable System, Achieving 450G Waves and 19Tbps Fiber Capacity

Sparkle and Ciena announced on Monday the upgrade of Sparkle’s fiber pair on the Curie submarine cable system connecting Chile to the US. The upgrade was deployed with Ciena’s WaveLogic 5 Extreme (WL5e), the industry’s first 800G programmable solution, resulting in an ultimate capacity of up to 19Tbps on Sparkle's fiber pair on the Curie cable system, using 400Gbps and 450Gbps wavelengths, operating at 95Gbaud.

FCC Grants Submarine Cable Landing License for the Jupiter Cable System

According to the FCC public notice, the FCC granted the application of submarine cable landing license for the Jupiter cable system on July 6, 2020. The FCC granted the application upon coordinating with the Department of State and other Executive Branch agencies. The applicants and the licensees of the Submarine Cable Landing License for the Jupiter cable system include: (1) NTT America, Inc. (NTTAmerica), (2) NTT Worldwide Telecommunications Corporation (NTT WT), (3) Edge Cable Holdings USA, LLC (Edge USA), (4) HKT Global(Singapore) Pte. Ltd (PCCW Global), (5) PLDT, Inc., (PLDT), (6) SoftBank Corp. (SoftBank), and (7) Amazon Data Services, Inc. (ADSI).

JGA North is Ready for Service

Singapore, 6 July 2020 – RTI Connectivity Pte. Ltd. (RTI) and NEC Corporation (NEC) jointly announced the successful completion of the Japan-Guam-Australia North Cable System (JGA North). JGA North is approximately 2,700 kilometers in length and lands in Minami-Boso, Japan and Piti, Guam. The cable has an initial design capacity of 24 terabits per second (24 Tbps) minimum, increasing to 30 Tbps in the coming year.

Asia Direct Cable Consortium to build new Asia Pacific submarine cable

Tokyo, June 11, 2020 – NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) today announced that the Asia Direct Cable (ADC) Consortium is building a high-performance submarine cable connecting China (Hong Kong SAR and Guangdong Province), Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. The consortium has selected NEC to construct the 9,400-kilometer long ADC cable, which is expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2022.

Global Marine Group Fully Divests Stake in Huawei Marine Networks

HC2 Holdings, Inc. (“HC2”), the legacy controlling company of Global Marine Group (GMG), announced recently the completion of the sale of its 30% stake in Huawei Marine Networks Co., Limited (“HMN”) to Hengtong Optic-Electric Co Ltd (“Hengtong”). The 30% interest in Huawei Marine Networks was sold for $85 million. Huawei Marine Networks has an enterprise value of US$285 million. Huawei Marine Networks is now owned by Hengtong (81%) and HC2 (19%) subject to a two-year put option. According to GMG, it has fully divested stake in Huawei Marine Networks.

HMN Successfully Completes the Marine Survey of MSC System

Huawei Marine Networks (HMN) announced the completion of the marine survey for the Maldives Sri Lanka Cable (MSC) system that connects Hulhumale, an island in the Maldives archipelago, to Mount Lavinia in Sri Lanka. The MSC system will be completed by the end of 2020.

Egypt's ICT Minister Appoints Mohamed Nasr Eldin Assistant Minister for GII

According to press release from the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) of Egypt, the Minister Amr Talaat has issued a decree appointing Mohamed Nasr Eldin Mohamed Ali the Assistant ICT Minister for Global Information Infrastructure (GII) for one year. Nasr Eldin is a respectful verteran in developing and running submarine cable systems, global telecommunication networks and the Internet. He was the Head of Subsea Cable Infrastructure at PCCW Global prior to this appiontment, and headed International Business Unit at Telecom Egypt for years prior to his roles at PCCW Global. He contributed a lot and work extensively for the PEACE cable, the AAE-1 cable and other subsea cables.

Emergent Chooses Arc as Lead Consultant for the Orient Express Cable

According to Infinera, Asia-Africa-Europe-1 Consortium (AAE-1) has recently completed a significant upgrade with Infinera to boost capacity on its subsea network connecting East Asia to Europe via Egypt. Based on Infinera’s industry-leading fourth-generation Infinite Capacity Engine (ICE4) technology and Instant Bandwidth capability, the Infinera solution enabled AAE-1 to double the capacity on its intercontinental network while reducing total cost of ownership and increasing service agility and network reliability.

The Commercial Division of the High Court of England and Wales in London on Friday (May 22) ordered Anil Ambani, the former chairman of the bankrupted Reliance Communications, to pay approximately US$717 million to three Chinese banks within 21 days, pursuant to a Facility Agreement and a binding personal guarantee. The court also ruled the court costs of 750,000 pounds in favor of the claimant (Chinese banks), owed by the defendant.

Vodafone, a member of the 2Africa consortium comprising China Mobile International, Facebook, MTN GlobalConnect, Orange, Saudi Telecom Company (STC), Telecom Egypt, Vodafone and WIOCC, announced in a blog post by Nick Gliddon, Director of Vodafone Carrier Services that Vodafone is naming the 2Africa cable the “System Honouring the Achievements of Rick Perry” (SHARP) to acknowledge the huge role Rick Perry has played in bringing SHARP and many other cable projects to fruition.

Facebook announced on April 21st the acquistion of 9.99% stake in Reliance Jio Platform for Rs43,574 crore (US$ 5.7 billion), bringing the equity value (market capitalization) of Reliance Jio Platform to US$ 57 billion. Following Facebook's investment,  US-based private equity firm Silver Lake acquired 1.15% stake in Reliance Jio Platform for Rs5,655.75 crore (US$ 746.8 million) on May 4; Vista Equity Partners acquired 2.32% stake in Reliance Jio Plaform for Rs11,367 crore (US$ 1.5 billion) on May 8; General Atlantic acquired 1.34% stake in Reliance Jio Platform for Rs 6,598.38 crore (US$ 870 million). These three investments moved the equity value of Reliance Jio Platform up to USD65 billion, with a price-earnings ratio (P/E) of nearly 90 times, and an increase in market capitalization of USD8 billion within an half month.

2Africa: a transformative subsea cable for future internet connectivity in Africa

2Africa consortium comprising China Mobile International, Facebook, MTN GlobalConnect, Orange, Saudi Telecom Company (stc), Telecom Egypt, Vodafone and WIOCC announced on Thursday that they will partner to build 2Africa, which will be the most comprehensive subsea cable to serve the African continent and Middle East region. The parties have appointed Alcatel Submarine Networks (“ASN”) to build the cable in a fully funded project which will greatly enhance connectivity across Africa and the Middle East.
