Sunnyvale, CA, October. 11, 2011 -- Infinera and Pacific Crossing announced today the successful completion of a 100 Gbps subsea trial on the trans-pacific PC-1 network. The subsea trial spanned more than 9,500 kilometers on PC-1 fiber from California to Japan.
This 100 Gbps trial on PC-1 network demonstrates the unique ability to deliver two industry firsts. The 100 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) demonstration was the first transmission of a 100 GbE client service carried across the Pacific using 40 Gbps optical channels with Infinera’s FlexCoherent transmission. The success of this trial was based on Infinera’s commercially available 40 Gbps optical line module and 100 GbE client interface on Infinera’s DTN platform. The second demonstration was the first realization of a 100 Gbps optical channel using binary phase shift keying (BPSK) with soft decision forward error correction (SD FEC) that will be available in the future on Infinera’s DTNX platform.
Infinera has completed successful trials of 100 Gbps and 500 Gbps super-channels across the globe, recently with SEACOM in Africa and Interoute in Europe.
It was reported in June 2011, 100G trial was also successfully completed on another transpacific submarine cable system, the Southern Cross Cable Network.
The trans-pacific Internet bandwidth demand have been experiencing exponential growth in the past years. And the growth is forecast to continue, thereby driving the need for submarine system equipment to deliver capacity of 40 Gbps per channel and even 100 Gbps, instead of currently 10 Gbps per channel.
