Submarine Networks World 2017

Jerry Brown, Hengtong Marine Cable Systems

Joining our interview series is another industry veteran Jerry Brown, Technical Director of Hengtong Marine Cable Systems. Having worked in the subsea cable industry for over 30 years, Jerry’s career ranges from stints in R&D with TL (with STC Submarine Systems), Marine Operations with ASN and Technical Project Management with JDR Umbilical Systems. Since joining Hengtong Marine three years ago with the responsibility for Product Development, Product Quality and Technical Support for engineering solutions, the company has grown steadily and gained traction in the subsea cable industry.

Another veteran with over 20 years of industry experience, Mahesh Jaishankar of du oversees the company’s global infrastructure development and management, which in turns supports du’s commercial goals and requirements. Though a relatively young operator, du has seen healthy growth over the last decade, and currently holds over 45% of market share. With the Middle East and Africa region predicted to have a 6-fold growth in IP traffic and 445 million new Internet users by 2020, Mahesh and his team can expect a busy time in the years ahead, as the team is also in charge of building the business cases for investment into infrastructure such as submarine cable systems and data centre deployments.

In early 2017, H.I.G Capital acquired the assets of Xtera Communications and relaunched the company as Xtera. Since then, the company has shifted its focus solely on the submarine market, including subsea cable upgrades, new builds, and the recovery and redeployment of systems. Since its formation, Xtera has been introducing new products into the market and looks to continue maximising and pushing beyond the capabilities of today’s subsea cable technology to better serve its customers.

We recently spoke with Robert Richardson, Xtera’s Founder and Chief Sales Officer, who discussed Xtera’s perspective on the current subsea market and the company’s outlook for the future.
